March/April 2022

Welcome Our New Client Services
Coordinator, Wendy Boggs!
Where are you from (where did you grow up)?
I am from Richmond but moved out to the Atlee area of Hanover when I was a teen.  I still reside in Hanover.

What is your role at CancerLINC?
Client Services Coordinator
What led you to this career?
I was looking for a part-time position while finishing my Master’s in Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling when I learned about this position.  After reading about CancerLINC and speaking to several people who had wonderful things to say about the organization, I decided to apply.  Personally, I have lost several close friends and family members to cancer, so the mission resonates and is close to my heart.

What do you find rewarding about working here?
Helping individuals connect with resources is quite rewarding—the sense of relief that comes across as they hear CancerLINC can help is palpable and quite a rewarding thing to witness.   Additionally, the atmosphere of the CancerLINC is outstanding and I was made to feel a part of the team from day one.

If you could snap your fingers and become an expert in something, what would it be?
I would love to be able to snap my fingers and be an expert guitar player.  I took lessons for a few years and still “dabble,” but I fear I will never be an “expert.”  I’m quite envious of those people who can just pick up a guitar and start strumming and picking tunes.

What hobbies / other interests do you have?
I’m a Gerontologist and love interacting with older adults.  I also enjoy travelling, specifically to visit friends in Louisiana, which I consider my “home away from home.”  On a day off, you can typically find me reading, binging Golden Girls, and playing with my Cats, Bailey and Agnes.

A Very Special Awards Luncheon

CancerLINC Annual Awards Luncheon was held on Friday, April 1, at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. 70 guests were in attendance for this special program that honored four incredible CancerLINC volunteers and one volunteer law firm for their dedicated efforts to help the cancer patients we serve. Dr. Mary Helen Hackney welcomed the guests on behalf of VCU Massey Cancer Center, the Presenting Sponsor. This being our 25th anniversary year, the two CancerLINC founders, Ann Hodges and Phyllis Katz were honored for establishing the organization and for their years of involvement. The program also included several testimonies from local patients who were helped by CancerLINC and our volunteer professionals.

The event was enjoyed by all and was successful in raising over $22,484 that will benefit CancerLINC’s programs.

Photos from the event can be accessed on our website at cancerlinc.org/annualawardsgallery.

More details about Beyond Bags! will be available soon. For now, you can view the event gallery at cancerlinc.org/beyondbagsgallery
